The Final Countdown: The ECCA Redevelopment News Roundup

1 March 2011 No Comment

It’s been a big two weeks since the unveiling of the five proposed designs for the City Centre Airport Redevelopment, and today’s the final day for Edmontonians to provide input to the city’s selection committee. In that spirit, we’ve compiled a list of news stories and reviews if you’re feeling out of the loop and want to catch up at the last minute. After that we’ll show you how to submit your opinion.

First off, we’ve provided a lot of coverage here at the Charrette. We talked to Phil Sande, executive director of the project, and then posted reviews of the designs by BNIM, Foster + Partners, KCAP, Perkins + Will, and Sweco International.

The Urbane Adventurer provides a different and interesting perspective on the proposals, speaking more to the social and cultural implications of the designs. Fish Grikowsky also took a look at the designs for SEE Magazine.

Of course, the Edmonton Journal has a number of articles. A former aviation official says the history of the site should be preserved, David Staples thinks the design needs to lure in folks from the suburbs, and the city’s most crotchety councillor isn’t happy with the designs, but that’s probably because he wants the airport kept open.

If you’re not looking for a distilled version and instead want to see the proposals in their entirety, then head over to the City of Edmonton’s website.

If you’ve seen a bit of discussion on the web that we missed, let us know in the comments.

Submit Your Opinion

As for having your voice heard, you have until midnight tonight. There is one public forum left, tonight from 5-9pm at the shiny new Terwillegar Recreation Centre. If you can’t make it to that, then fill out the online questionnaire.

This is a big deal for the city, so be sure to get your thoughts in and help shape this new development.
